A small hallway can often be a challenge and one of the most neglected spaces in our homes.

Most end up being a dumping ground for shoes, coats, post, keys and anything else you can think of.

Yet, it is the first space that guests see when they enter your home so why not spend the time and effort ensuring your hallway impresses even the pickiest of visitors?

Here are some easy fixes to transform a narrow hallway into a cosy, light, and inviting space.

1 – Smart shelving

A simple shelf, above concealed storage units, is the perfect place for keys, welcoming vases of flowers or potted plants and family photos will add a touch of personality.

2 – Mirrors

Reflective surfaces are great when it comes to broadening your visual space. Adding one large mirror or a handful of small ones to the center of the hallway will expand your sight lines.

3 – Make a feature

Not always you must get rid of the so called “clutter”.  A fun peg board gives a sense of purpose on one wall together with some fun hooks or a simple peg rail and attractive baskets making the space immediately identifiable as an area to store garments. Add a bench to provide a seating area, and stow the baskets neatly underneath.

4 – Tall & minimal furniture

To give the appearance of a wide open hallway avoid bulky furniture. Invest in a console with tall legs and a minimal design which will house keys and mail, and visually will allow for a more free flow.

5 – Light the space

Lighting will make or break this room, especially if it’s a narrow hallway. The brighter it is the bigger a space looks, so make the most of it. Track lighting can be a great solution because it will allow you to shine a light at the deepest and darkest corners of the space. But also consider a pendant that will work with the room decor.

6 – Paint the walls

Painting the hallway a light colour will give it an open and bright feel.  Any light colour will do, and better even if the paint itself offers a hint of sheen so it reflects the light.

7 – Add colour to your dado

In addition to wall colour, you can also open up your space by colouring the dado. Add depth by choosing a colour with tones that complement the wall. And make sure to include painting the same colour on the skirting board which will look great but also help to reduce the appearance of scuffs and wear.

8 – Add artwork

Artwork will also broaden your visual space, but for this to work well stick to one side to maximize the potential of the space.

9- Add a runner

Create the appearance of a longer hallway by adding a long runner through the centre. Choose one with light and bright colours to make the most of this top tip.

10- White-washed floors

Just as light coloured walls can open up your space, the same will happen with light floors. It will make your ceiling appear higher and add a contemporary look.

Happy Sunday!
