Moving house is something we do on average 7 to 8 times in our lifetime. We all know how stressful that can be so finding ways of making the move easier is important. Luckily there are hundreds of tips and tricks for simplifying the process.

Firstly contact a removal company so they can come and see you to assess the job in hand. Then pack early, one room at a time – this is one of the most important packing tips amazingly often neglected. By doing so you stay organised and are able to tell the movers, which box goes where.

Start with rooms you least need and pack the items you don’t use on a daily basis i.e. seasonal items you’re currently not using such as garden tools, clothing and decorations.

  1. Declutter

The most important thing you can do is to have a serious clear out. A good rule is if you haven’t used it for two years, you probably don’t need it. Since the volume of your belongings will affect the removal cost why not give your old unwanted items to charity or sell it on eBay, Facebook, Friday Ad, etc.

  1. Packing

If you choose to pack instead of the removal company then remember to pack light items in large boxes and heavy items in small boxes. This packing tip alone will save a great deal of pain to you and/or the removal company.

Use old newspapers or old rags to fill the gaps in the boxes and use sheets, towels and clothing as padding so your belongings will be secure for the removal.

To save space load things into a bin, laundry basket, suitcase and hoover pack bags; you can pack up almost an entire wardrobe in one suitcase.

  1. Labelling

Write the contents on each box with a marker and use a different colour for every room or use colour coded stickers to help you identify what’s what. Also write on the sides of the boxes and not on top and this will make it easier to recognise them when stacked.

If you have children ask for their help. Kids love drawing and colouring, what better way to reduce the stress of moving and helping your kids cope with the move?

  1. Photos

Before unhooking and unplugging take photos of the back of the television or any other electronics so you are able to recreate the setup when you move. Also take photos of any wall displays or ornament placement you have in your home that you’d like to recreate at the new location.

Once you have done that get zip lock bags in various sizes and pack all the wires and cables, nuts and bolts, medications, toiletries, documents, etc.

  1. Survival Kit

Believe or not this will probably will be the first thing you will need once you will get to your new home. This will consist of your bedding, pyjamas, a change of clothes, phone charger, tools (screwdriver, pliers and hammer), cleaning products and rags, toaster and kettle, toilet paper, tea towel, a few snacks, tea bags, coffee and some milk.
